Heat Interface Units (HIUs) are typically installed in large multi-dwelling buildings such as a block of flats or apartments in place of a conventional combination (or other) gas boiler.

Heat is provided to each HIU via a centralised heat source, such as a large output commercial gas boiler or via a district heating system, which may also supply heat to other buildings or offices nearby.

As well as regulating the energy supplied to the individual dwelling, HIU's enable the heating and hot water used to be monitored (via an energy meter) and charged accordingly to the dwelling occupants.
